BIOGRAPHY

Tenor Sahel Salam, a 2023 National Grand Finalist of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and 2022 Winner of the Mario Lanza Competition, enters the 2025–2026 season as a new ensemble member of Theater Freiburg. This season he appears as Oronte in Alcina, Il Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, Pylade in Iphigénie en Tauride, and sings the title role in Massenet’s Werther.

Mr. Salam recently covered Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Glimmerglass Festival following two seasons with the Washington National Opera. During his tenure at the Kennedy Center he performed Jaquino, Pang, and Tybalt, and covered Roméo in Roméo et Juliette. He also made his Cincinnati Opera debut as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor.

His repertoire additionally includes Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Alfredo (La traviata), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Rodolfo (La bohème), and the Italian Singer (Der Rosenkavalier).

An alumnus of the Academy of Vocal Arts, Mr. Salam has received training from many of the world’s leading young artist programs, including the Glimmerglass Festival, The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, the Merola Opera Program, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera Jerwood Young Artist Programme, and the Music Academy of the West. 

Emerging as one of the most promising and versatile tenors of his generation, he is increasingly recognized for the clarity and elegance of his lyric sound, incisive musicianship, and compelling dramatic presence across the repertoire.
